Re: You're Crazy |
THEY'RE the crazy ones imo. well, not crazy necessarily, just ignorant and misinformed. i struggle with this so much. one of my buddies is a big time jazz/blues listener, he's got great taste for the most part, and he's constantly harping on GD. he says his big problem is he doesn't like any of the songs.
then there's my jamband buddies who "get it" more, and still hate on the Dead. they all say "they're too slow and boring"(!) and would all rather listen to Phish, String Cheese or Umphrey's McGee. I just do not get this. These bands are all very talented, but imho they cannot touch the GD. they just don't seem to get that GD is not party music for the masses. i would liken it more to classical music; it's the kind of music that requires your undivided attention to fully appreciate, and I don't think that sits too well with the ADD crowd these days.

Re: You're Crazy |
Wait. They don't think Phish is boring, but they DO think the Dead are? Huh? I mean, I can get someone liking both. Or thinking Phish is boring but loving the GD (raises hands in air). Or not liking either one. But Phish OVER the GD?!? That's gotta be a cultural thing, cuz I just don't see how it could be musical. Is it, like, a sociological thing among Phish fans to rag on the GD or something? I guess I'd have thought they'd, well, revere them.

Re: You're Crazy |
It boggles my mind AR believe me, but I definitely think it's sociological. A lot of my friends are into the electronic/techno scene, and their drugs of choice are "uppers." Hence they do not enjoy "mellow" music of any sort. This still doesn't explain to me how they can discount hundreds of energetic Dead performances, especially from the late '60s where, to me at least, the energy is just off the chain. Again, I think it just also comes back to ignorance and close-mindedness; I don't think they've been exposed to a lot of these recordings, nor do they wish to be...

Re: You're Crazy |
another post of genius. Good stuff AR and rain and snow as well. It definitely has something to do with the whole funky grooves that phish does, peoples ADD, GD's mellow jams or slow tunes. And like AR said, its cultural. And yes AR, there (IME) are more phish haters of the dead than vice versa. Its also much easier, IMO, to turn a dead head onto phish than vice versa. I have a buddy that is hardcore phish head but totally gets the dead and loves them. He actually gets dark star and the other one etc. It took a while to convert him, but once he understood Morning Dew from barton hall, well he realized how epic the dead can be. hooked ever since :)

Re: You're Crazy |
It's a totally different vibe, in my opinion. Phish does the light-hearted, quirky stuff very well. They're great musicians, but they don't really even try (as far as I can tell) to connect with people on a higher level emotionally like the GD did. What's Phish's answer to Dark Star? Stella Blue? What's Phish's Wharf Rat? Their lyrics are playful and ironic -- more like Zappa than Hunter.

Re: You're Crazy |
I totally agree with this. Most of their songs are ridiculous to the point of being pointless almost, but to me this is not the focus of their music anyway. They are very talented, but they are lacking the emotional element both in the playing and the songs that makes GD so special. And i think they aren't as original as GD either, their early work especially apes Zappa a lot. So much that i have, at times, mistaken them for him!

Re: You're Crazy |
man o man caboose. Are we the same person? Its frustrating to say the least. And i couldnt agree more, the dead is just... beyond umphrees and string. Phish is def better but imo doesnt do what the dead does (obviously) and i just love what the dead does. Though i do love phish and they play some epic music.
